LUAU PARTY IDEAS

Having a Luau party is one of the greatest ways to have fun. You can have a very simple or complex Luau party. The best way is to incorporate your decorations, costumes, Leis[a must], food and music to get your guests in the proper mood.
First, it is a long tradition in Hawaii to greet your guests at the entrance and give them a Lei and a hug.
Sending out invitations can be simple mailers, coconuts with their address on them and a small message as to when and where the Luau party is or to a more elaborate use of a message in a bottle, you know castaway style.
The word "Luau" in Hawaiian means a feast. This means that the food should be a large consideration to start with. You can have your Luau party catered or you can order your favorite Luau foods through the internet. If you have the time and like to cook, you can get recipes from many different sources[internet, library, cook books] and cook them yourself by getting the ingredients from your local grocery store.
Have your guests dress casual, shorts, aloha shirts, muumuus[long flowing dresses with a flower or tropical pattern, flip flops, straw hats and anything else that has a tropical feeling to it. This will add to the atmosphere of your Luau party.
The decorations can be simple or complex depending on your taste and budget. To start off you can use tiki torches for your entryway and also to set them up around the perimeter of the area of your Luau party. The use of a tropical doorway bamboo curtain for the entrance will add that special touch for the guests. You can also use them as hanging decorations for a more tropical feeling. Strings of lights around the food tables to give good visibility for your guests. Table skirts around the food tables will give the impression of a tropical setting. Table decorations will really set off your tables and will give your guests the feeling that they are in Hawaii. There are many different types of table decorations to choose from, either paper fold outs, small inflatable palm trees, wooden bowls with flowers [real or artificial], pineapples and/or coconuts, scatter seashells around the the food tables, table cloths [paper is best], fish netting with seashells woven into the mesh and hang them around the edges also help to create the mood.
Having some tikis around the yard or room will add to the tropical atmosphere of your Luau party. Tikis come in a variety of styles and materials. You can find these in paper cutouts, plastic or carved from many different kinds of wood. Place these around the food and drink tables. Some have lights inside so that the eyes will glow, giving them an eerie look.
String some palm tree, tiki or aloha banners around the area of your Luau party. Some inflatable palm trees with an optional built-in cooler are a great addition for those who like to have either can or bottled beverages.
Hawaiian or tropical music in the background really sets off the whole mood and gets your guests thinking of far off locales, wishing they were there themselves.
Set up an area where you can have a hula or a limbo contest. These activities are a lot of fun and watching your guests trying to do these of activities will get everyone laughing and into the spirit. Get one adult hula skirt, either Raffia or artificial, to give to the contestants. If you are going to children, also get a hula skirt for them, as they can get into the act themselves. The tops can be a bikini style swimsuit or you can get a coconut bra. Flowered or a tropical print t-shirt will also work just fine.
The beverages can be alcoholic or non-alcoholic as this is up to the host. Mia Tais, Blue Hawaiians, Pina Colodas and fruit juices make excellent drinks for a Luau Party. Fruit juices such as pineapple, guava, passion fruit, mango, lemon and/or lime or a mixture of many of the above. You can either serve them in large bowls or to add to the tropical atmosphere, have a tiki bar with a bartender to mix the drinks for your guests. Drinking cups can be paper, plastic, tiki mugs or coconut halves with small umbrellas sticking in them. Cut pineapple spears and add these to the drinks will make your guests feel that they are in a resort in Hawaii.
If you are planning your Luau party indoors, use a scene setter or wall mural[s] of tropical locations on the walls around the room to give the room that tropical feeling. Floating candles in bowls also work very well to give ambiance to the setting of your tables. Yard or hanging signs that show the way to your entryway will help your guests find their way.
The main objective of having a Luau party is to have a lot of fun, so enjoy the uniqueness of the best thing that Hawaii has given the world, A truly Hawaiian Luau.
